Carburetors, Engine Science, & Anarchy - this is ThunderHead289
Howdy, my name's Luke. I'm a programmer/automation engineer by day and youtuber . . . well, whenever I feel like it.
We do a lot of car science here, typically with a wild spin on it to some degree for fun - but ultimately I hope you all learn something from my videos here and that maybe, just maybe you wont have to struggle as hard as I did when I figured this all out.

You need to retitle this video .93 can not hurt your engine. No if you are talking real high octane like 140 and above yes. But premium can not hurt your maverick. You got diesel or kerosene. Stop spreading the bullshit.
That is one heck of a barn. Looks like it's in good shape too.
“Impressive for a bent piece of garbage” 😂😂😂
Greetings from Australia Luke. I always enjoy when another video drops. Thanks. I like that you only produce a video when you want to. I'm getting a bit jaded by the "pro" youtubers. This feels more like I'm dropping around to see what you've been up to. Even if I am a world away from Iowa. I like the tractors videos too.
Another Great video Luke!
Bru you're not 6 feet 7.
I sure am - I measure myself in my most recent video 😄
Great video
I appreciate all the information sir. Thank you
Luke you gta post more your videos are awesome an I’ve personally learned a lot watching you
Having more manifold vacuum should significantly lower the boiling point of the gasoline. This may be a factor for better atomization.
How ma 2 bbl CLEVELANDS DID THEY BUILD ,AN D WHY?????
That’s because it’s using yours pistons and cylinder walls as fuel, or more likely the engine oil because you got blow by son. And plus this shot looks fake or staged. It’s probably fuel injected or throttle body and he made it look like a lawnmower carb
Watch the full video in the pinned comment if you want to be proven wrong - but you won't, because you're dumb
valve cover gaskets
Parked that long, on top of MUD, does not keep many things in good shape. Living in the south we find cars like that one, but in much better shape. We get zero snow, so no salt. And its a breeze working on the brakes, rotors. Dang those mice like to create homes anywhere they can. WOW, Spinning the back tires, I thought they were going to bust!
the first car I purchest new was a 1969 VW
why is it saying 1927
You never know what a station might do. Back in the early seventies when I was a kid I was using a 57 Ford pickup to go to Roseburg from Eugene to pick up a goat. I filled the truck up add about halfway to Roseburg it started spitting and sputtering and running really rough. I don't know how I made it to Roseburg but I did and my friend help me drain the fuel tank and sure enough they had watered down the gas. A tank full of fresh gas and it ran fine. That was back in the days of the gas wars when they were trying to get the prices raised up.
You just saved my butt. My smart ass went to wipe a host exhaust with a microfiber towel and it instantly burned to the pipe, with a 1967 penny I was able to get all of it off plus some black gunk (probably boot rubber) off of it as well. Looks better than before I messed it up 😂
Holy Cow! 6'5", They stack s....nope, low hanging fruit. Dang Luke, you're the last of the full grown men! I do hope with Hendrix fingers like those, that you play the Electric Twanger. From watching the video car looks like it's riding on square wheels.
There's too much water in gasoline and the reason is too much water in the the gas because it's it's not sold as much as regular gas most people say I don't 😢see water in it that's because alcohol and water mixed together in gasoline and you're not going to see the water but your car is going to know it has too much water in the gasoline that's why the top of the Pistons are carbon up
Every time I visit my kid at ISU, I’m always on the lookout for ratty Maverick than runs better than it should.
Wow, great video with an awesome ending!
My Dad had a car with that same engine. And with dual exhaust it sounded really good. And I had to Bush Hog so many times in my life at about 15 years old. My uncle would call me to go to his house, then tell me to do that. He knew I did not like to. So he lied sometimes to get me to his house. Too many of his neighbors were too old to do it them selves. And I usually was the one doing it for them. I really did not like to do that. I could not wait to finish to head home and get cleaned up a to go to town in my 1978 Camaro. My brother in law installed 3.08 gears. So I had a pretty good time cruising in town.
Is this man still alive?
Why do you look like you might have drug problem?
Oh dude, 50 miles round trip. I lived in Texas for a long time, and Most of my jobs were 65 One way. I lived on the west side of Fort Worth Texas, but worked in Dallas only. That is where most of the IT jobs were located. I really enjoy your videos. Me and my cousin do a lot of car work, just don't put it out on UA-cam.
Hey Luke does it have a 2 speed rear? It should and it would help it go faster than 50mph…
It doesn't - previous guy put a semi truck axle in it.
@@ThunderHead289 ohh yeah that explains it. my freightliner cascadia has like a 5.32 rear in it but 10 gears.
I live in south Florida, I run only full synthetic (with quality filter)10w30 in all my mustangs, cars and trucks ... zero issues
Yeah, completely irrelevant to the subject at hand ol boy
@@ThunderHead289 read the header of the post ol boy
Was driving a F150 through the desert and all was fine at 65 MPH. Anything faster and the temperature gauge would go up. Finally deduced that the push on connector on the sending unit would make a poor connection due to air blowing the wire around. First time more cooling air across the heat exchanger increased the temp.
It's diesel or is it corn. They have yellow pumps for corn? Green diesel, black reg gas. Corn for flex fuel. I'm glad your babys back. How many cars did this mess up? We better pay attention to what pump we are using. And hopefully the tanker put the right stuff in. Scared us for a minute we want maverick back. Sorry it happened.
Can run inside with doors closed and wont get anything motor wont carbon up
Make bong for gas tank put suck part on carb . Tank will be cold after run even if on motor
I have experience with this guy's I know added fuel to there new to them day cruiser not knowing it was diesel after running it wide open for a unknown amount of time the 350 chev stopped running after it cooled off it ran again but not very well after replacing all the pistons (broken ring lands on all pistons) the Chevy survived another day Oh there was some vodka that the pilots had that was a problem also. On the same kind of problem I know someone that O/Hed a Series 60 Detroit Diesel that seized up when it was put in service blamed the builder for the failure and repaired the engine and it failed when put to work repaired again and failed again after looking at the situation the engine was not the problem and the fuel was tested (hard to do and expensive) discovered benzine in the fuel which had been banned in gasoline but not in diesel so they had benzine they couldn't get rid of so they put it in diesel where it had not been banned I don't think anybody told the epa. Watch the fuel you buy.
Regarding enriching just beyond the point of maximum vacuum: 1) The point of maximum vacuum is the optimum point for the complete burning of fuel at idle. 2) The maximum point of power occurs at a slightly higher mixture. If you adjust for maximum vacuum, your plugs will be white, your emissions will be high, and you will be down on power. But you will get peak fuel economy.
Mix screws have nothing to do with hard throttle - that's all jetting and power valve work.
@@ThunderHead289 That's why I said "at idle". Thanks for another fun video. I used to have a '69 Fairlane 500 Sportsroof with a 302. It never looked as good as this Torino!
Try using a weed eater carburetor. 🤷♂️ 🍀
3/8” Chain for Motor Mounts ? And a Nylon Ball Valve as a Manual Fuel Shut Off ? Idk if that’s all legit…🤷♂️
A torque chain isn't weird - just for folks unfamiliar with old-school stuff. Very googleable
@@ThunderHead289 I’d put a turnbuckle on it, and keep it snugged down. That’s what I used to do to most of my Demolition Derby Cars, even if the motor mounts were fine. 🤑👍Other people would run a single chain over the timing chain cover. 🤷♂️ I’’m not sure if your ball valve is fuel rated, though old school ? 🧐
Ok, nice, but can you make an engine run on gas vapors? well, I suggested it to another You-tuber and he took my idea! and it worked! just pretend like your engine is taking a big bong hit off a long Hong-Kong bong with-out the actual gas liquid going down, that's it, pretty simple, good luck! Then I'll tell ya how to make a hydrogen fuel cell using the metal Gallium! nobody has done it yet, but if you can figure out how to recycle the metal in an in-closed container! then we will both be rich!, good luck again! (oh, you didn't know Gallium separated hydrogen from water? ya do now!
Why isn’t it running lean 🤯
Where would the extra air come from?
Can I install this in a 2014 Kia Soul? 😂
The indoctrinated will cry foul
I have a 1968 C10 Chevy with a Holley 4 way. I’m wondering if I could do the same on my small block V8? Thing guzzles gas. Every trip knocked a half a quarter off the fuel gauge.
Can you do a horsepower comparison if possible? Run it on a dyno to compare how much power is lost by switching carburetors?
That has been done and is googleable
Old timers like me always heard the Cleveland was a better engine vs Windsor in the late 1960s and early 70s. I had a 1957 Ford 2 door auto with a 292 stock in late 60s. I always spent 30 minutes getting the distributor back in after putting in new points and condenser. Timing was easy a/c in way of timing light. I also used a craftsman dwell meter and vacuum gauge. Fond memories.
16:50. His hands are vibrating. Is it the car, or excitement?
I’m gonna have to find a come and go.
I love the chain. Great idea.
You’re gonna break the internet.
This would be interesting if tried on a modern already efficient motor.
